I like exercises that hit different muscle groups at once. More bang for your buck. Plus I feel that muscles were meant to work together to accomplish things, rather than just be bulked up in isolation. Squats are a great compound exercise that hit your quads, glutes and calves. For added difficulty and some shoulder and back activation, at the gym you would grab a dumbbell for extra weight and hold it like it you just found the holy grail, and call it a “goblet squat”. Honestly though, at home you can use a gallon of water or anything at all (even two smaller exercise weights together) for the added weight that you want. To perform the exercise, stand with feet shoulder width apart and toes pointed out slightly, weight grasped firmly with both hands and then lower into a squat keeping your back straight. To do this correctly, imagine that you are facing a wall and you are trying to sit onto a kiddie chair just behind you. You don’t lean forward because your face and knees will meet the wall. You don’t lean back too far or you fall backwards. It is almost a balancing act and you should feel all the weight going down through your heels. Once you are down as far as you can go, use your strength to stand up straight again. Again, all the force should drive through the heels. That’s one. Try to do eight of them, before taking a 1 minute break. Aim for 4 sets. Also, if you are wondering how far to squat down, I would say go until your thighs are parallel to the ground, but really squat down as deep as your flexibility and strength permit, noting that your tailbone (and thus your spine) should not curve under you at all and your strength should permit you to stand back up.
Food review: Trader Joe’s Chunk Light Skipjack Tuna in Water with Sea Salt
I occasionally look for a new can of tuna and I wanted to share my thoughts on Trader Joe’s Chunk Light Skipjack Tuna in Water with Sea Salt. Sometimes I want a lean protein in my diet and fish fits the bill. I like my canned tuna to look tender and juicy without being held together by weird fish jelly. It should taste good too. Also, I prefer to eat smaller fish because they have less of a chance to bio-accumulate bad things like mercury. Trader Joe’s canned tuna looks fresh and pinkish (not dead grey), tastes moist and delicious (some other tunas taste dry despite being immersed in water) and has just the right amount of salt. Also, skipjack tuna grow up to 1 meter in length, so they are not the super huge tuna we see on television. The can’s label says the fish are “pole and line caught” and there is an emblem saying “Dolphin Safe”. It’s really one of the best cans of tuna that I’ve had. Give it a try! One 4 ounce can goes for $1.69, so that’s $0.42 per ounce for those that care about the unit cost. That’s a great price for a great can of tuna. Also, the whole can has 110 calories, which is 25g protein, 0g carbs and 0.5g fat. Lean indeed!
Your inner child
My mother sent me this quote the other day. I told her I was going to borrow it for our blog. She said that’s the nice thing about quotes…everybody swaps the ones that inspire them! Quotespiration! I always thought that was a clever word! I wish I thought it up! This week I wanted to share this quote with you all! According to the Cambridge Dictionary, “Your inner child is the part of your personality that still reacts and feels like a child.” Today is the start of another fresh, new week! Let’s all nurture that inner child within us and fill ourselves with love and gratitude and exhale out our troubles. Start this week with a clean slate. Try letting go of your fears and thoughts that hold you back and fill your body with positivity and love and see if you have a good day. And then do that again tomorrow. And the next day. And if you have a set back, that’s ok. You start over the next morning. Each day fill yourself with love and gratitude…for yourself, for your loved ones, for the big things and the little things. That’s your goal today! And every day!
Move to your heart, Breathe.
Close your eyes and breathe deeply – slowly –
fill your lungs with love and gratitude –
exhale each and every trouble –
again and again – gratitude in, troubles out.

Have you booked a flight?
We took our girls to IFLY in Yonkers, NY before covid hit. IFLY has locations all across the USA. Have you been? It’s a real blast! It’s basically indoor skydiving in a wind tunnel. When we were there we saw people of all ages trying it out from the young to the old. Phil and our girls took a an orientation class when they first arrived and then they got suited up with a flight suit and helmet. They were nervous but excited. Everyone stands around the tunnel and watches each person take their turn. Which is helpful so you can get a feel for what to expect when it’s your turn. Each flight lasts around 60 seconds. You start off slow with a flight instructor who can help correct your form and assist you when you need help moving around and then they slowly show you how to go up the tunnel. The flight instructors also take a turn in the tunnel by themselves so you can watch someone advanced. It is really cool to see them flip and fly really fast like superheros! Plan to be there about 60-90 minutes total. They even do birthday parties! I couldn’t participate since my shoulder likes to dislocate but I had a great time watching my family! It’s not scary and a lot of fun! If you are ever looking for something different to do check this place out!

Bring the world to you
About 6 years ago, I took to the treadmill. It is a story all its own on how I started that. Today’s special chapter is about how I took running to the next level and realized something about the world. Treadmill running is great. The aesthetic downside is that the view stays the same. Yes, there are fancier versions with screens, but you get my point. So, if you ever drove a car and paid attention to how long a mile is, it feels pretty long. Like, “that was one mile?.. and the sun is 93 million of those away?!” On the treadmill though, you develop your fitness to run a mile pretty quickly. You also get curious about what running that distance outside for real feels like. My train station was about a mile away. I drove to it every work day to commute. One day I thought I would run there for kicks. I laced up. It was about an hour before dusk. Off I went. On the way there, I realized that the suddenly banal daily route was fascinating. Every crack in the concrete, slightly overgrown shrub, and garden gnome that I came across was vivid and interesting. You might think that this was the most interesting part. But there’s more. Even more profound than the new life of the world around me was the new sense of scale that I felt. As I arrived at the station (slightly out of breath because I was still fairly new to running and because I often ran faster than I had any right to), I was surprised to feel that the mile that I just ran was…short. The ripple effects of this followed me everywhere that I went and has profoundly changed my view of the world. Suddenly everything was very close and accessible. Neighboring towns were just around the corner. Bridges were short. Highways were merely a few dozen laps around a track. I could suddenly understand how a hobbit could pack supplies and trek through a mountain pass to fight evil. (It’s just a short mountain pass folks!) The world really became much smaller and brighter for me that day.

The superman exercise: a hero to your glutes, back and shoulders.
I think that a lot of people are overly focused on “pushing” movements (e.g. pushups and crunches) that workout the front of your body and they are not doing enough pulling movements that target the backside. The superman hits your glutes, hamstrings, upper and lower back and rear shoulders.
You begin by lying on your stomach with legs straight behind you and your arms in front palms down and shoulder width apart. Simultaneously lift your arms and your legs vertically and hold for a couple of seconds before lowering (see instructional video). That’s one. When lowering, don’t completely go all the way down. Rather, sustain the tension for the next one. Do 10 for one set. Rest for 30-60 seconds. Try to do 4 sets. Note that when you are raising your legs, the focus is less about lumbar spinal flexion and more about trying to make your glutes and hamstring do the work to lift your legs. The actual amount of lift won’t be a lot, but do your best to focus and activate those muscles.
Foiled again with kitchen cleanup? Not with this life hack!
They say that fat loss begins in the kitchen. If you are one of the chosen few to have learned this – whether taught or learned by accident – then the kitchen food scale is one of your most trusted weapons in your arsenal for taking the offensive against excess body fat. Still, every time you measure out your 4 ounces of baked chicken breast or 6 ounces of sweet potato, that scale should be wiped down. Or does it? Now, I’m not at all suggesting that you add half an ounce of salmonella to your meal along with an ER visit. What I mean is, if you lay down a piece of foil on the scale, then the weight of the food that you are measuring remains practically the same and all you have to do for cleanup is toss out the foil. Every day I pull about 4 inches from the roll and tear that off, so it’s a 12″x4″ sheet. Then I tear that up by hand into several 4″ strips. The first time you will end up with a piece of foil shaped like Italy, but after you do it a couple of times, you’ll be a master of foil tearing. Seriously, having these little foil strips in the cupboard saves me a lot of annoying clean up time during the day and makes using the food scale far less cumbersome. I hope you find it useful too!

A little sunshine
“Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.” – Laura Ingalls Wilder
Spring time is the… enjoy some sun on your face and feel the breeze type of season! I feel fortunate to live near a beautiful rose garden in town. It is called Boothe Memorial Park in Stratford and it has so many different roses in it’s award winning garden. If you are ever in this part of Connecticut it is worth it to stop by and walk around! Where is your favorite place to go outside and get some fresh air and feel the sunshine? No matter where you live take a moment to step outside, feel the sunshine, listen to the birds and enjoy some fresh air!
Bingeing right now
Sometimes you have to let things go. The escalating costs of cable were too much for us. Just before COVID started, we decided to cut the cord and resorted to streaming services to fill the media hole. It wasn’t easy, because you have to fully commit to trying the new way while fully letting go of the old way in order to reduce the costs since it’s far too easy to subscribe to streaming AND keep cable. The only thing that we sometimes miss is the occasional live awards show only available on a network channel, but if you really need it, you can buy a month of a live network channel for a pretty low price. Hulu and Netflix is where we landed for streaming.
Here are some fun shows we are hooked on…
Renee’s picks:
HULU- Younger, Being Erica, Little Fires Everywhere, Married, Mr. D, The Handmaid’s Tale
Netflix- Schitt$ Creek, Imposters, Dead to Me, The Stranger, Ozark
Phil’s picks:
HULU- Rick and Morty, Fear the Walking Dead
Netflix- Blood of Zeus, Baki
Add a little color to your life
Two years ago we decided to to do a staycation of sorts. We live in Connecticut. About a 90 minute train ride from NYC. We often go to NYC for fun to catch a show, go out to eat or see something new and it’s usually just a day trip. But this time we booked a hotel and stayed for an extended holiday weekend and spent time doing lots of things! Not having to ride back on the train totally exhausted from a day chock full of activity was a bonus!
One of our outings was to Color Factory! They are also in Houston and opening a third location this winter in a new city that has yet to be announced! If you ever get the chance to immerse yourself in color I highly suggest it! We had a blast! I’m totally into fun, unique and creative activities and this one didn’t disappoint! Bring your camera, be silly, have an open mind and enjoy your walk from room to room exploring color!

“Instagram butt” or Anterior Pelvic Tilt?
Ever see someone do something and you say to yourself “that can’t be good right?” An easy example is a guy lifting a heavy thing, with bad posture, and doing a twisting motion. On instinct alone, you know it’s just not right. But what about something more subtle?
Ever see someone pose or walk with their booty with a little extra “pop”? Not sure if “Instagram butt” is a coined phrase, but that’s what I’m referring to here. Prized by many of the world’s Kim K followers, could the elevated derriere really be a Kracken, as yet unleashed? Let’s analyze: I read that our sedentary lifestyles can promote a posture that can make our glutes and abs weaker, while making other muscles tighter. The result is the Anterior Pelvic Tilt, where the front of your pelvis is rotated down, while the back of the pelvis is rotated up. Yes, it sounds exactly like what “Instagram butt” looks like. See the image showing regular posture compared to an exaggerated Anterior Pelvic Tilt posture. While an excessively curved spine might be the modern definition of “hot” (like the “good ole days” foot binding in Japan and the Victorian era faint-inducing corsets), the possible damage to your lumbar vertebrae might not be worth it. At best, sticking your booty out will do nothing. At worst, your lumbar vertebra will grind down and possibly require spinal fusion surgery to lock them in place.
I’m neither the fashion police, nor a doctor, but if you want a healthier spine (and better fitness while you’re at it), then there are a couple of exercises that can help you get your pelvis back into alignment: Glute Bridges will strengthen those butt muscles which will rotate the back of your pelvis down, while Dead Bugs will strengthen your abs and pull the front of your pelvis up. Please see the demonstrations of these exercises in our previous posts for guidance on doing them.
Happy Fitness everyone!

Want to make your ground beef less fatty? It’s super easy!
Ground beef and other meats often have a high fat content. Perhaps they have more fat than what you need. Browning and draining the meat gets a lot of fat and water out. If we are talking about 80/20 ground beef then 4 ounces of raw meat becomes 3 ounces cooked and loses 68 calories from 7.6 grams fat just from regular draining. To get even more out is really easy! Put a paper towel on your plate, place the meat on it and use your spatula to move the meat around a bit to let the paper towel do its job of absorbing. When you toss that paper towel away, you’ll feel how heavy it is with that extra liquid. It should save you about an extra 40 fat calories from 4.5 grams fat!

Do more of what you love
“Growth is painful. Change is painful. But nothing is as painful as staying stuck somewhere you don’t belong.” -Mandy Hale
Recently, my family and I were playing the lottery. The jackpot was some crazy amount. I can’t remember the amount but it was enough money that if you won you could instantly quit your job and be set for life. Before the winning numbers were read aloud we all had a conversation about what our new life would be like. Where would we want to live, what type of house would we want, etc. It was my turn and after some thought about my house and where I would like to live…I thought about my job. Most people’s first thought is probably about quitting which seems fun to be able to spend each day doing whatever you want, whenever you want but…when I thought about it I didn’t want to quit my job. I have always been fortunate to work in places that I enjoyed going to everyday. If I won the lottery I would love the peace of mind it would bring but I wouldn’t want to quit my job. If you won the lottery would you quit your job? Do you enjoy going to work each day? When you think about the job you are doing right now…is it fulfilling and does it bring you joy? If not…what would you rather be doing? What type of atmosphere would you prefer to work in? Like Mandy Hale said above “nothing is as painful as staying stuck somewhere you don’t belong”. It might be hard to make a job change but if you don’t try looking you can never make a change at all. Look at the job postings. See what’s out there. Try interviewing. You don’t have to take the job if it’s not for you. But, trying is the first step. When you do something you enjoy every day it makes such a difference. It’s hard to make a change. It’s scary to make a change. But, it’s worse to stay where you aren’t happy. Where you aren’t respected. Where you aren’t fulfilled. Being mindful at work is being happy with what you are doing. If you are at work and you are thinking about other things that make you happy then you’re enjoying those things that you are thinking about more than your job. Mindfulness is essential if you want to enjoy your job. It’s easy to make an excuse and not try, but today is a fresh new week…so try taking a step forward for yourself. Take a moment and look at those job postings. See what’s out there! You never know what you might stumble upon…
8 is great!
Our little Daisy turned 8 this past week! We sang happy birthday to her and gave her a few presents…one gift was from her daycare! The day before her birthday she went to her favorite doggie daycare called Wag Central to hang out with her friends and get a bath! We discovered this wonderful place when we moved to town and we are so fortunate that it’s nearby! It is incredibly clean, spacious, offers all kinds of classes, has a swimming pool, a groomer and a cute retail shop and doggie cafe! It is pretty incredible! I am glad that daycare helps her socialize with other dogs too! When she attends they always text me a photo of her during the day…I attached one here of her actually smiling! If you have a local doggie daycare consider bringing your dog…there are so many benefits. We’ve been taking her once a week. Daisy used to be reluctant to go inside but now she runs in and when I pick her up she is fully tired from all the fun she had all day long! Makes my ❤️ happy!!

Give it a go
I see people ask how one starts on the path of healthy living and eating nutritiously (mainly for the purpose of losing weight). I think it has to grow from within yourself if it is going to work. It’s an organic growth that starts with the idea of wanting something. Maybe it won’t work the first time, but if you try it enough, something will catch and then you will be on your way. I remember hearing that it takes an average of seven attempts to quit smoking for one to actually succeed. I don’t know if this is a real statistic. I do like the notion that if you keep doing something, then at some point probability glances your way, favorably, and you succeed. So don’t give up. Keep trying. Have faith in yourself until it works.
Dead bugs can be fun…
No, this is not a childlike sense of wonder upon finding a pill bug. I am talking about a good core and ab exercise which is called the “Dead Bug” and it is kind of fun to do.
Lie back on a mat. Stretch your arms straight up to the sky and legs up with knees bent at 90 degrees. This is the starting position. Now extend your left arm above your head to get it parallel to the floor while straightening your right leg down to get it parallel to the floor. Then bring them back to the starting position. Now do the same for the right arm and left leg and together that’s one rep. Repeat that 12 times to make a set. Aim for 4 sets, taking 30 seconds to 1 minute rest between sets.
The rice cake: made better with chocolate?
What fitness endeavor hasn’t eventually come across the rice cake? It is simple, low calorie, crunchy and tasty. Its most subtle and perhaps most important point of appeal for the fitness minded is that there is a lot of it to munch on for so few calories. In other words it is high on the, “best bang for your buck,” scale of snack satisfaction. Enter Quaker’s Chocolate Rice Cakes. Like many products, they look chocolatey and boast chocolate pieces in them (each cake is 60 calories, with 1g protein, 1g fat and 12g carbs). Quaker does it differently and their execution is spot on. The chocolate flavor is just right for the rice cake, but the real finesse is from the chocolate pieces. They are not merely the random flat broken pieces or chunks that you see in many other snacks. They are small peppercorn-sized pebbles that have just the right toothy bite and burst of sweetness. They are sometimes alone and sometimes clustered, giving variety to each encounter. Their distribution and amount on the cake is good too – never just on one side or otherwise absent. Our family is constantly fighting over them and we can’t seem to keep enough in the pantry. Well done Quaker!

Plant a mindful garden
Happy Monday y’all! Thought we would start off today with a little inspiration! I love this quote from Jackie Trottmann…
Your mind is a garden. Your thoughts are the seeds. You can grow flowers. Or you can grow weeds.
I believe in karma. Karma roughly translates to action. Like causes produce like effects. I’ve had good karma days and bad karma days. What I throw out into the universe seems to always come back to me. Hence, why I believe in karma. Do you believe? Do you ever do something good for someone and something good comes back to you in return? Or are you ever aggravated and say something not so nice to someone and then a minute later stub your toe? Something along those lines? This kind of stuff always happens to me. I think it’s the universes way of keeping us in line hahaha
I love this quote and hope it helps you to be mindful of the thoughts and actions you send out today. Don’t plant any seeds of doubt or negativity in your mind. Plant some hopefulness and happiness and cultivate some positivity! Same with food…you can eat a bunch of junk food with ingredients you can’t pronounce and drink sodas with all kinds of chemicals or you can put some healthy food in your body and reap the benefits of healthy fats, protein and fiber to name a few. Feed your mind and body and soul today and grow some flowers of your own!
Happy Easter, Happy Spring, Happy Happy Everything!
Easter baskets, chocolate bunnies, colored eggs, pretty dresses & fancy shoes were some of the things my girls looked forward to each Easter! When my girls were little we probably went to 3-5 egg hunts each year. I know…it’s a lot! The girls had a blast though! I would plan something holiday related to do each weekend leading up to Easter. We loved the New Canaan Nature Center’s egg hunt and the town of Rowayton, CT has a good one too but that was geared towards real little kids. The Young Women’s League of New Canaan puts on a fantastic celebration at Waveny Park with bounce houses, the Easter bunny, a huge egg hunt, a bake sale and face painting. We attended one event where a helicopter dropped thousands of eggs onto a field but it was sort of chaotic and not geared for little ones. I always kept my eye out for local fun events via marypoppins.com, the local paper, libraries and ctparent.com to name just a few!
Here are some pics from one of our previous Easter celebrations. Party City has always been my local go to, I also like Michaels, Palmers in Darien, Etsy and Ebay is my favorite for my daughter’s outfits! Do you have a favorite crafty way that you incorporate into your holiday? Drop a line or share a pic! I’d love to see it! Wishing you all an egg-citing day!!
A helping hand!
If you ever get an opportunity to volunteer for any of your kids school activities I would definitely recommend it! Way back when my daughter was in the Girl Scouts…well, Daisies that is…the troop needed 2 leaders. I was reluctant to volunteer because I was worried that I had no idea what I was doing and I wasn’t sure that I would be able to find the extra time to do what was needed to be done. But, I decided to volunteer and I was so glad that I did! I was able to get to know my daughter’s friends a little bit better, I enjoyed planning fun activities for the girls (and they seemed to really love what we planned) and it was nice to spend some extra time with my daughter too! I’m not going to lie…sometimes it was tough fitting in the extra time to plan and prepare for the meetings but it was so rewarding in the end.
Take the opportunity when you can to pitch in and go the extra mile. It is so easy to drop your child off to an activity and pick them up when it’s over and go on with your day. But, I can tell you from experience that when we planned activities and parents would come in to help out… their children were so happy to see them!! And it was so helpful to us to have parent volunteers as an extra set of hands to help out. Even if you can only volunteer in a small way it sets a wonderful example for your children that volunteering and giving a helping hand is what you do when you live in a community. Another added bonus is that it is a great way to meet other people in your community. I am pretty introverted and it really helped me to get to know the other parents better by talking to them at the pick up or working with them on projects. Setting that example early on plants a seed so that one day when your kids are in your shoes they will instinctively help out!
Glute Bridge, Single-Leg
Most people know the regular glute bridge, where you lie on your, back plant your heels with knees at 90 degrees, and thrust your hips up. While working out at home, I wanted something a little more difficult without having to find and put barbell plates on my hips. A more advanced version is the “Single Leg Glute Bridge”, where you keep one leg straight out and elevated and then use the other leg to perform the glute bridge alone. It’s harder because that one leg is doing all the work and is also carrying all the weight as you thrust your hips up. Try to hold each thrust for a couple of seconds. When you come back down on each rep, try to maintain muscle tension by not fully 100% coming down to the mat. Do 10 for each leg before taking a short 1-2 minute rest. That’s one set. Try to do 4 sets. See the video where I do a couple on each side for a quick demonstration of the movement. Also, it takes a little getting used to because isolating each leg does requires coordination and focus to make that mind-muscle connection. Before long you will be doing it perfectly and you’ll have stronger and more-toned glutes!
A dose of good cheer!
I’ve killed a lot of plants in my day. Not on purpose. I just never seemed to have a green thumb. I think I tend to over water them. After moving into a new home not too long ago. I bought a fake fiddle leaf fig tree. I’m not a big lover of fake plants/trees/flowers but I had just moved, was low on cash and didn’t trust myself to keep it alive. I found a nice fake tree at HomeGoods and It was really cute but I knew one day I wanted to replace it with a real live tree. After a while I started going to a few shops to price fiddle leaf fig trees and oh my gosh…. have you priced them lately?? For a five foot tree they were about $200! At that price if I killed it I would be pretty upset that I wasted so much money for being careless. Cut to one day while I was at work and my coworker mentioned that she found some cute stuff on Facebook Marketplace. I have been on Facebook for many years but literally never checked out Facebook Marketplace. Have you looked???? You need to! It’s awesome. It is similar to craigslist but there is something about it that seems less murdery haha. Anyway, I went on there and happened to stumble on the garden section and wouldn’t you know it…. someone listed a real 5’ fiddle leaf fig tree for $60!! Not cheap but not three times the price that you would find in a store! I wrote the girl selling it and we arranged a pick up time and then I adopted my new tree! It proudly sits in my dining room and I bought a cute wicker basket for it to sit in from HomeGoods… I read directions on how to take care of it and so far it has been thriving! It makes me so happy! On a side note…I have been hearing a lot in the news about how plants can boost your mood, calm your stress levels and blood pressure and increase your creativity among other things. I was going to say I haven’t noticed a change in myself but I did just start this blog with my husband so maybe it is boosting our creativity!! Time will tell! In the mean time I gotta go and see what else I can find on the marketplace! Maybe our teens could use some plants in their rooms! Check it out and then tell me your favorite Facebook Marketplace purchase!
Some normal days
I went up into my attic where I am temporarily storing my many scrapbooks from my mother to find a good quote for this week. She always finds the best ones and is much more poetic than I…than me? Hmmm… see what I mean!! In any event after pouring through my albums and losing track of time I found a good one! It’s hard to find just one quote that resonates with the mood of the week. Let alone pairing it with just the right photo takes some time. Add on top of that a lazy, rainy, Sunday afternoon and one can lose all track of time!! I got caught up in the beautiful artwork and arrangements that she came up with and it was fun looking back at when my girls were little. Most people store their photos on a phone or the cloud or a thumb drive and rarely have printed photos laying around so I feel pretty lucky to be able to open an album and look through them with my kids. Sorry! I’m getting off track! I wanted to say that I look forward to some normal days as I am sure most of you do too! When we can go about our day to day lives hanging out with friends and family, giving someone a hug, talking closer than six feet apart, eating in a restaurant, taking in a movie, walking down the street or through a park without a care or worry in the world and just be in the moment.
Please enjoy this quote from Mary Jean Iron…
NORMAL DAY, LET ME BE AWARE OF THE TREASURE YOU ARE. LET ME LEARN FROM YOU, LOVE YOU, BLESS YOU BEFORE YOU DEPART. LET ME NOT PASS YOU BY IN QUEST OF SOME RARE AND PERFECT TOMORROW.

Protein Cookie first look: the NuGo Perfect Cookie
The NuGo Perfect Cookie is a product made by NuGo that I haven’t seen before, so I picked up a couple to see how they are. I bought the Dark Chocolate Chip Cookie and the Double Dark Chocolate Chip Cookie.

NuGo’s main selling points appears to be that they are packed with plant-based protein and are low in sugar and have low net carbs (7 grams and 5 grams net carbs respectively). The packaging also says they are non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free and keto friendly. They each have 190 calories. I usually expect protein cookies to be more dry and more dense than regular cookie. That was the case here. The chocolate chips are the tiny variety and I didn’t feel that they were lacking. Each tasted just sufficiently like a regular cookie so that if I wanted a cookie as a treat, but I still didn’t want to blow my nutritional goals, then I could have one of these to satisfy my sweet tooth. Other protein cookies often still have a lot of sugar or total carbs, but the NuGo Protein cookies keep the net carbs low by using fiber and sugar alcohol (erythritol, specifically). They are also sweetened with Stevia. I would get these again should the need for a cookie arise.
Today is a good day to try something new…
You know what’s one thing that I love about little kids? They are more open to trying new things. No fear! When my girls were little I tried to expose them to lots of new things. I wish I had realized this sooner but I did my best when it finally hit me! I thought if my girls tried something new they would see if they had any interest in pursuing it further.
For about 7 years I worked at a local ice rink. I worked in the office and often brought my girls there when they had a day off from school or it was a school break/vacation day. It was helpful for me and they had fun figure skating and running around the arcade, café and chatting it up with my coworkers. One day it dawned on me that it would be great for the girls to try ice hockey! They were open to it and soon we were borrowing gear from friends and the rink! The girls got all laced up and went on the ice! Quickly they discovered figure skates and hockey skates were very different! After about an hour on the ice with one of my coworkers they got in the rhythm and then they tried hitting the puck around. In the end it wasn’t a sport that they ended up loving but they did try out a few clinics and I loved how they were open to the idea. The older they get the harder it is to try to get them to try new things. Teenagers get so concerned about what their peers think that they tend to shy away from something new for fear of embarrassing themselves. If you have little ones get them used to trying new things and explain to them that nobody is the best at anything right off the bat! It takes time and this is just for fun! Hopefully, they’ll find something they love to do and maybe you’ll discover you like it too!
Let’s Get Moving!
This move is called a switch jump lunge. It is like a lunge, but with the added intensity of a jump. It’s a great lower body exercise that requires strength and coordination The starting position is a basic lunge, so place one leg back and place the other leg out front forming a 90 degree angle with your knee directly over your foot to get the form right. Now explosively jump and switch legs, landing again in a lunge and when you land. Don’t let your back knee touch the ground, because you want to sustain the tension and you don’t want to bang your knee on the ground either. Do 10 for each side, so 20 total per set. Rest for 30 seconds (or however long you need). Repeat. Try do do at least 4 sets. For a HIIT session try to do this for 15 minutes.
Puppy Love
Our dog Daisy isn’t exactly a puppy even though she acts like one! She is 7 years young! We adopted her when she was about a year old from a couple that traveled a lot for work, had young kids and felt like they didn’t have enough time to devote to a puppy. It was perfect timing for us! We had never had a dog before so it was super helpful when the couple gave us their dog crate, bed and everything we would need to care for her when we picked her up. It wasn’t until recently, when my daughter happened to have some friends over that we brought down a bean bag chair from the attic and ever since then Daisy has decided that it was her new favorite chair! She clocks some serious nap time in that bean bag and you can even hear her snoring! It’s pretty funny! I’ve read that dogs like bean bag chairs because they bring on a sense of warmth, security, they are easy on the joints and they are cozy. I never see bean bags in the dog section. Sometimes they look similar but in the end it’s just foam padding with a bolster of some sort around the edge. Our dog loves to cocoon herself into the bean bag. If you happen to have a bean bag chair try introducing your dog to it and see what happens!
Hey you, look up!
“Sometimes a break from your routine is the very thing you need” Anonymous
I pulled this quote out of one of my mom’s scrapbooks. I thought it paired nicely with this photo I took. I totally understand how easy it is to get preoccupied with your day to day activities…getting the kids off to school, getting to work on time, picking the kids back up from school, shuffling them off to activities, making dinner, cleaning the house and on and on and on and it doesn’t end! I hate to complain because I know how fast these days fly by and one day they will be all grown up and on their own! But, today I went on a walk with my daughter and as we were walking and talking I decided to look up at the sky, I watched the birds flying around and I listened to the sounds around me. I feel like I am always looking down or forward but rarely do I just look up. Try it out! Listen to the birds chirping. Look at the clouds moving swiftly in the sky. Take a deep breath and slowly exhale. If you have a moment this week…take a break from your routine and look up!
Small Changes…Big Impact!
We moved into our new home two years ago. Time really flies! My youngest daughter was so excited to decorate her new room. We really worked hard on it and it turned out great! The theme was black, gold, grey and white. Two years later she tells me that she wishes it looked different and then she showed me her ideas. The theme was turquoise, royal and white. Very different than before! I was less than thrilled because I thought her room looked great and it had only been a couple of years! But, I understood that she felt the room wasn’t exactly her and so I obliged. But, we had to do it inexpensively. So, we bought some spray paint and changed up some of her furniture and we painted the walls white and we bought these super fun wall decals! There were so many to choose from but we landed on these turquoise palm trees online and they really are perfect! And the best part is that they are inexpensive and peel off very easily! The next time she wants to redo her room the decals can be changed out for the next new theme and you know what? I don’t think I’ll be as bothered. Sometimes small changes can make a big impact and changing up your room is part of growing up and finding yourself!
Finding Fit…
I like to recall when I originally discovered how I went from overweight to fit. Knowing, what worked, as well as what didn’t helps me to change and drive my improvement.

At my peak, just before losing weight, I was around 175 pounds. Not wildly large by any measure, but my feet hurt daily and joint pains were starting to develop.

After losing nearly 50 pounds in a year, my foot and joint pains disappeared. The asthma that I had for the past 20 years was gone as well.
I discovered weight loss by accident because one day I decided to not eat anything that resembled “sweets or snacks” for a year. Out of the blue. For no reason. Not even for weight loss or fitness. It was just to see if I could. For fun. — A little background might help. I had gone for an entire year with water as my only beverage. Just for kicks. But that’s another story. — So Cookies and donuts = nope. Chips and cheese puffs = no. Those were the easy ones. If I had to even think about it (e.g. pretzels), it was out. About a month later I felt my pants fit more loosely. I jumped on a scale to see what was up and it was 169. Periodically I would get on a scale because we had one and I hadn’t seen a sub-170 reading in a while. “Interesting,” I thought. By the second month it was 164. A second similar drop in weight was no coincidence. This hit me like a ton of bricks. Immediately I felt that I had discovered a leprechaun pot of gold. I knew instantly that I was on to something and that if I was careful, I could mine it for all it was worth. Perhaps for the first time in my life I understood what people meant when they said, “if you can believe it in your mind, you can make it happen.” Sayings like this always sounded hopeful, at best.. and glib, at worst. On that day, in my mind, the loss of all excess body fat had already happened. I was merely waiting for time to pass and catch up to this fact. Truly, this was my experience that day. The very next thought was, without hesitation, “fight club.” This, I decided, would be my final form. Actually.
So, the reality is that it took me about 8 months to lose a ton of body fat, and my prescience was accurate to that point. Also the reality: merely losing body fat will not automatically give you the physique of an underground street fighter. That pursuit is another story.
Good mornings.. the workout!
For a workout for your lower back as well as hamstrings and abs, try the “good morning.” Make sure you get the form right. Keep your back straight.

Start bending over and hinge at the hips, while keeping your back straight.

Continue bending until you are at a 90 degree angle and with your back parallel to the ground. Hold this position for around 5 seconds.

Keep good form as you engage your muscles to straighten up and complete the movement.
Try to do 4 sets of 15 repetitions. In the gym, people often use a barbell, but this exercise is easily modified for an at-home workout. You can keep you hands on your hips to make it easier as you bend, or have your arms outstretched or hold onto cans of food as weights to make it even more difficult.
Don’t forget to consult your doctor or trainer before changing your diet or workout routine.
Vitamin B-12 Deficient?

Some people get a vitamin B-12 deficiency. B-12 is an essential vitamin (that is, our bodies cannot produce it) that supports nerve cells, red blood cell formation and DNA synthesis. For me, it manifested as a “brain fog” which felt like everything was run through a black and white television grain filter. I confirmed it with a doctor, and doctors offer B-12 injections. I opted for oral B-12 drops (purchased online). The “brain fog” lifted. I think the deficiency is from the low replenishment rate. We keep using our own stores but don’t get enough from the food that we eat. As we get older this cycle develops into a deficiency. I like using B-12 (in the Methylcobalamin form) that comes in a dropper bottle and I place a few drops with the dropper under the tongue. That basically tries to get some through the capillaries in your mouth and the rest from being ingested. Vitamin B-12 is a very large molecule and is easily destroyed, which is the reason that half a dropper is 50,000% the recommended daily value. You take a lot and statistically some will survive the digestive process. Basically, B-12 supplements are something that helped my brain fog, but please remember to talk to your doctor about your situation.
“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory” Dr. Seuss
Ever since I became engaged my mom took up scrap-booking as a hobby. It wasn’t intentional it just sort of happened that scrap-booking started to get popular and my mom who loves to be creative gravitated towards this new craze. Since I lived in a completely different state than my mom I started taking lots of photos and sending them to her. Once a year I would drive from the east coast to Ohio to visit my mom and extended family and she started surprising me with scrapbooks of that year in photos. Through the years her scrapbooks have evolved creatively…from the stickers, colorful paper, typography poetry, picture arrangements and themes…she has done it all and never ceases to amaze me. She is in her 70’s now and always says that this scrapbook will be her last and then she creates another one! It has always been fun to open the new album and see what she has created! Lately, she has been taking pictures of my family or my nature shots and adding in quotes that call out to her. The artistry in her writing really brings it to a new level. It has inspired me! From time to time I am going to share some of my photos and her quotes and pair them up for you on Mindfulness Mondays and maybe you too will be inspired to do the same! Isn’t that the best part about art? Sharing with others and inspiring each other!
**the picture shown here is of my girls about ten years ago…I feel like I blinked and now they are teenagers…I would love to go back in time and see them like this again!
