Do you know squat.. about goblet squats?

I like exercises that hit different muscle groups at once. More bang for your buck. Plus I feel that muscles were meant to work together to accomplish things, rather than just be bulked up in isolation. Squats are a great compound exercise that hit your quads, glutes and calves. For added difficulty and some shoulder and back activation, at the gym you would grab a dumbbell for extra weight and hold it like it you just found the holy grail, and call it a “goblet squat”. Honestly though, at home you can use a gallon of water or anything at all (even two smaller exercise weights together) for the added weight that you want. To perform the exercise, stand with feet shoulder width apart and toes pointed out slightly, weight grasped firmly with both hands and then lower into a squat keeping your back straight. To do this correctly, imagine that you are facing a wall and you are trying to sit onto a kiddie chair just behind you. You don’t lean forward because your face and knees will meet the wall. You don’t lean back too far or you fall backwards. It is almost a balancing act and you should feel all the weight going down through your heels. Once you are down as far as you can go, use your strength to stand up straight again. Again, all the force should drive through the heels. That’s one. Try to do eight of them, before taking a 1 minute break. Aim for 4 sets. Also, if you are wondering how far to squat down, I would say go until your thighs are parallel to the ground, but really squat down as deep as your flexibility and strength permit, noting that your tailbone (and thus your spine) should not curve under you at all and your strength should permit you to stand back up.

Food review: Trader Joe’s Chunk Light Skipjack Tuna in Water with Sea Salt

I occasionally look for a new can of tuna and I wanted to share my thoughts on Trader Joe’s Chunk Light Skipjack Tuna in Water with Sea Salt. Sometimes I want a lean protein in my diet and fish fits the bill. I like my canned tuna to look tender and juicy without being held together by weird fish jelly. It should taste good too. Also, I prefer to eat smaller fish because they have less of a chance to bio-accumulate bad things like mercury. Trader Joe’s canned tuna looks fresh and pinkish (not dead grey), tastes moist and delicious (some other tunas taste dry despite being immersed in water) and has just the right amount of salt. Also, skipjack tuna grow up to 1 meter in length, so they are not the super huge tuna we see on television. The can’s label says the fish are “pole and line caught” and there is an emblem saying “Dolphin Safe”. It’s really one of the best cans of tuna that I’ve had. Give it a try! One 4 ounce can goes for $1.69, so that’s $0.42 per ounce for those that care about the unit cost. That’s a great price for a great can of tuna. Also, the whole can has 110 calories, which is 25g protein, 0g carbs and 0.5g fat. Lean indeed!

Your inner child

My mother sent me this quote the other day. I told her I was going to borrow it for our blog. She said that’s the nice thing about quotes…everybody swaps the ones that inspire them! Quotespiration! I always thought that was a clever word! I wish I thought it up! This week I wanted to share this quote with you all! According to the Cambridge Dictionary, “Your inner child is the part of your personality that still reacts and feels like a child.” Today is the start of another fresh, new week! Let’s all nurture that inner child within us and fill ourselves with love and gratitude and exhale out our troubles. Start this week with a clean slate. Try letting go of your fears and thoughts that hold you back and fill your body with positivity and love and see if you have a good day. And then do that again tomorrow. And the next day. And if you have a set back, that’s ok. You start over the next morning. Each day fill yourself with love and gratitude…for yourself, for your loved ones, for the big things and the little things. That’s your goal today! And every day!

Move to your heart, Breathe.
Close your eyes and breathe deeply – slowly –
fill your lungs with love and gratitude –
exhale each and every trouble –
again and again – gratitude in, troubles out.

Have you booked a flight?

We took our girls to IFLY in Yonkers, NY before covid hit. IFLY has locations all across the USA. Have you been? It’s a real blast! It’s basically indoor skydiving in a wind tunnel. When we were there we saw people of all ages trying it out from the young to the old. Phil and our girls took a an orientation class when they first arrived and then they got suited up with a flight suit and helmet. They were nervous but excited. Everyone stands around the tunnel and watches each person take their turn. Which is helpful so you can get a feel for what to expect when it’s your turn. Each flight lasts around 60 seconds. You start off slow with a flight instructor who can help correct your form and assist you when you need help moving around and then they slowly show you how to go up the tunnel. The flight instructors also take a turn in the tunnel by themselves so you can watch someone advanced. It is really cool to see them flip and fly really fast like superheros! Plan to be there about 60-90 minutes total. They even do birthday parties! I couldn’t participate since my shoulder likes to dislocate but I had a great time watching my family! It’s not scary and a lot of fun! If you are ever looking for something different to do check this place out!

Bring the world to you

About 6 years ago, I took to the treadmill. It is a story all its own on how I started that. Today’s special chapter is about how I took running to the next level and realized something about the world. Treadmill running is great. The aesthetic downside is that the view stays the same. Yes, there are fancier versions with screens, but you get my point. So, if you ever drove a car and paid attention to how long a mile is, it feels pretty long. Like, “that was one mile?.. and the sun is 93 million of those away?!” On the treadmill though, you develop your fitness to run a mile pretty quickly. You also get curious about what running that distance outside for real feels like. My train station was about a mile away. I drove to it every work day to commute. One day I thought I would run there for kicks. I laced up. It was about an hour before dusk. Off I went. On the way there, I realized that the suddenly banal daily route was fascinating. Every crack in the concrete, slightly overgrown shrub, and garden gnome that I came across was vivid and interesting. You might think that this was the most interesting part. But there’s more. Even more profound than the new life of the world around me was the new sense of scale that I felt. As I arrived at the station (slightly out of breath because I was still fairly new to running and because I often ran faster than I had any right to), I was surprised to feel that the mile that I just ran was…short. The ripple effects of this followed me everywhere that I went and has profoundly changed my view of the world. Suddenly everything was very close and accessible. Neighboring towns were just around the corner. Bridges were short. Highways were merely a few dozen laps around a track. I could suddenly understand how a hobbit could pack supplies and trek through a mountain pass to fight evil. (It’s just a short mountain pass folks!) The world really became much smaller and brighter for me that day.

running on the beach is also pretty great

The superman exercise: a hero to your glutes, back and shoulders.

I think that a lot of people are overly focused on “pushing” movements (e.g. pushups and crunches) that workout the front of your body and they are not doing enough pulling movements that target the backside. The superman hits your glutes, hamstrings, upper and lower back and rear shoulders.

You begin by lying on your stomach with legs straight behind you and your arms in front palms down and shoulder width apart. Simultaneously lift your arms and your legs vertically and hold for a couple of seconds before lowering (see instructional video). That’s one. When lowering, don’t completely go all the way down. Rather, sustain the tension for the next one. Do 10 for one set. Rest for 30-60 seconds. Try to do 4 sets. Note that when you are raising your legs, the focus is less about lumbar spinal flexion and more about trying to make your glutes and hamstring do the work to lift your legs. The actual amount of lift won’t be a lot, but do your best to focus and activate those muscles.

Foiled again with kitchen cleanup? Not with this life hack!

They say that fat loss begins in the kitchen. If you are one of the chosen few to have learned this – whether taught or learned by accident – then the kitchen food scale is one of your most trusted weapons in your arsenal for taking the offensive against excess body fat. Still, every time you measure out your 4 ounces of baked chicken breast or 6 ounces of sweet potato, that scale should be wiped down. Or does it? Now, I’m not at all suggesting that you add half an ounce of salmonella to your meal along with an ER visit. What I mean is, if you lay down a piece of foil on the scale, then the weight of the food that you are measuring remains practically the same and all you have to do for cleanup is toss out the foil. Every day I pull about 4 inches from the roll and tear that off, so it’s a 12″x4″ sheet. Then I tear that up by hand into several 4″ strips. The first time you will end up with a piece of foil shaped like Italy, but after you do it a couple of times, you’ll be a master of foil tearing. Seriously, having these little foil strips in the cupboard saves me a lot of annoying clean up time during the day and makes using the food scale far less cumbersome. I hope you find it useful too!

A little sunshine

“Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.” – Laura Ingalls Wilder

Spring time is the… enjoy some sun on your face and feel the breeze type of season! I feel fortunate to live near a beautiful rose garden in town. It is called Boothe Memorial Park in Stratford and it has so many different roses in it’s award winning garden. If you are ever in this part of Connecticut it is worth it to stop by and walk around! Where is your favorite place to go outside and get some fresh air and feel the sunshine? No matter where you live take a moment to step outside, feel the sunshine, listen to the birds and enjoy some fresh air!

Bingeing right now

Sometimes you have to let things go. The escalating costs of cable were too much for us. Just before COVID started, we decided to cut the cord and resorted to streaming services to fill the media hole. It wasn’t easy, because you have to fully commit to trying the new way while fully letting go of the old way in order to reduce the costs since it’s far too easy to subscribe to streaming AND keep cable. The only thing that we sometimes miss is the occasional live awards show only available on a network channel, but if you really need it, you can buy a month of a live network channel for a pretty low price. Hulu and Netflix is where we landed for streaming.

Here are some fun shows we are hooked on…

Renee’s picks:

HULU- Younger, Being Erica, Little Fires Everywhere, Married, Mr. D, The Handmaid’s Tale

Netflix- Schitt$ Creek, Imposters, Dead to Me, The Stranger, Ozark

Phil’s picks:

HULU- Rick and Morty, Fear the Walking Dead

Netflix- Blood of Zeus, Baki

Add a little color to your life

Two years ago we decided to to do a staycation of sorts. We live in Connecticut. About a 90 minute train ride from NYC. We often go to NYC for fun to catch a show, go out to eat or see something new and it’s usually just a day trip. But this time we booked a hotel and stayed for an extended holiday weekend and spent time doing lots of things! Not having to ride back on the train totally exhausted from a day chock full of activity was a bonus!

One of our outings was to Color Factory! They are also in Houston and opening a third location this winter in a new city that has yet to be announced! If you ever get the chance to immerse yourself in color I highly suggest it! We had a blast! I’m totally into fun, unique and creative activities and this one didn’t disappoint! Bring your camera, be silly, have an open mind and enjoy your walk from room to room exploring color!
